Succession Planning and Talent Management in the NHS

Succession planning and talent management are processes for ensuring that the NHS has the right people and capabilities to deliver world class health services both now and in the future. Succession planning and talent management are designed to create a pipeline of people to fill future vacancies and to retain and develop staff to maximise their potential. It can be broken down into the following constituent parts:

  • talent management and succession planning

  • managing talent at every level of the organisation

  • identifying “rising stars”

  • attracting talent into the NHS

  • retaining talent in the NHS

  • talent management activities.
